Caesar sent a letter
to the senators in Rome
to make 'em all aware
that he was dealing with some pesky Gauls
and the Belgians were the bravest
the bravest of them all
but was that just to make sure
that he wouldn't take the fall?

For his political career
was already in shambles
and the senate wouldn't take
anymore of his rambles
about victory and glory
in the battles that he'd fought
and he had won

Meanwhile all the banks in Rome
are making all the big ones
'cause Caesar's on a spending spree
and he's spared no expense
on the campaign that ruined him
and made him look the fool
by Jupiter he called out
how could life be so cruel

So he tried to save it now
by some clever lying
he was convinced that his way
he could keep his cause from dying
and what seemed like a compliment to Belgians
was just part of some politician's plans

In 1302, the French were knocking at our door
and we did something great
that was never seen before
we trashed the Frenchman army
with cunning and with wits
but the next year, they just came back
to blow us all to bits

Still we talk about that day,
with feelings of grandeur
which after a mere 700 hundred years
makes me wonder
have we done nothing more
than fighting in some ancient wars
that's actually worth mentioning at all?

I think it's clear to see the fissure struck between us
hosted by fear and lies
'cause ignorance can grow into hate
when provided with the right state of mind

And it's all part of our eternal struggle
for identity

But if war and hate is what we are
I think we're taking it too far
'cause all that I can see
is one big, crazy family raised by
